When it comes to Android handsets, it seems like HTC and Motorola run ahead of the pack. They have created perhaps the most exciting, if not the most hyped, Android handsets to date, including the Droid, the Droid Incredible, the EVO 4G, and, of course, the Nexus One. Samsung, however, wants in on the Android gold rush. As we learn via Android Guys, who posted the announcement you see below, Samsung plans to “unveil a new class of brilliant Android smart phones.”

Of course, they’re not going to say anything negative about their new set. And, considering the hype surrounding the Galaxy S Pro, they might be onto something. Speaking of the Galaxy S Pro, you don’t have to wait until the Samsung event on June 29 to find out about the device. On Sunday Android Central filed a report from a tipster that provides a hands-on take of the device. First, in pictures:

In terms of specs, it has a 480×800 res touchscreen that the tipster described as, “gorgeous.” It sounds like it will get the same four-inch screen size that we have already seen from the original Galaxy S. It has a 1GHz processor, which is always exciting, plus a dual-camera, 5 megapixels for the rear-facing one and a VGA version for the front-facing one. As you can see, it has Sprint branding and, like the EVO, has a WiMax radio.
The part that struck me was the description of the feel. Because it’s a slider it’s going to be thicker than other Android devices, which is always a pain. But what gets me is the description of the body. “Our tipster wasn’t impressed by the plastic feel, though it could just be a prototype thing,” said Phil Nickinson at Android Central. I certainly hope so. One of the reasons I got the Nexus One was because it actually feels like I feel a handset should. It feel solid, sturdy. Hopefully Samsung has a more solid feeling device when they make the official launch.
I’ve ragged on Samsung before, but I’m willing to give them a chance here. Not only on the Galaxy S Pro, which seems pretty awesome, but on their entire new line.
