Samsung wise to adopt Android

When I saw the following headline on Android Guys over the weekend, I could only respond with, “Good.” It comes from a Reuters report which noted that Samsung would include Android in 50 percent of its handsets going forward. That can only be a good thing. Sure, Samsung might be gaining traction with its Bada OS, which is also good. Anyone who has used a Samsung OS prior to Bada knows what Im talking about. I remember the hype around the Samsung Instinct, and then absolutely abhorring it once I got to play with it. It wasn’t intuitive, it didn’t run all that well, and it didn’t help that it was on a pretty crappy device.

WIth Android, maybe Samsung has a shot. I’ve never been the biggest fan of their hardware, though. I knew two people foolish enough to buy the Glyde when it came out, and in addition to the same crappy OS that the Instinct ran, the Glyde screen was horrible. Both of theirs cracked within a couple of months. I’m not sure if anyone else experienced that, but it certainly soured me on Samsung hardware.

Still, it’s encouraging to hear that they’ll be using Android on their future handsets. As it stands, they have the Behold 2. Anyone have one and enjoy it?

Having their own O.S. seems to be a conflict of interest. I find it hard to believe that they will ever sell Android on their best hardware once they get their operating system out the door. They will most likely attempt to justify all of the un-necessary spending during the development of their own proprietary O.S. by putting everything they have behind it. The Galaxy S looks like a great phone but if they really follow through with their own O.S., you know that their future Android phones will be handicapped. I suppose we could get lucky and they could sell Android phones without all the crapware custumizations that delay Android O.S. updates. They might actually see leaving their junky software off of the phone as enough of a disadvantage. Ah, wouldn't that be nice.

Don't confuse this idea with a company like HTC who does not have their own O.S. They are just building hardware around the most popular operating systems. You don't see the likes of Dell and HP trying to push their own operating systems on you. They focus on hardware as they should.

Yes, I enjoy the Samsung Behold 2 – After flashing the ROM to remove the bloated garbage that Samsung loads on there (why did they replace the calendar app???) and putting the stock Android image on the phone. Now it's great.

Android is a good OS and it does make it more tempting to use their devices now that they are using android.
