An Australian Tech News site Smarthouse states that the G2 may be a software upgrade for the first generation G1 Android phone launching in Asia on Monday February 16th.
This comes across to me as an odd and confusing statement.
The Smarthouse article starts with the obvious question Asian & Australian customers would ask Optus as to why should they buy the G1 when the G2 should be available relatively soon.
The G2 is assumed to be first publicly presented at the coming GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona which starts on the same exact day as the Optus G1 launch date.
The article answers this with:
“It emerged that the answer may lie in the fact that G2 may possibly be a software upgrade that may be downloaded to the launched Google phone.”
HUH?
Are they saying that the G2 will just be an Android codebase name or more likely are they suggesting that when the G2 device comes out that T-Mobile will provide the G1 with the exact same code as an upgrade?
In my experience the term upgrade is usually associated with a FEE while an update usually means FREE.
This could also bring up the Cupcake controversy if its fully ported to the G2 while leaving the G1 behind, so perhaps there is some snake oil salesmanship involved to get people to buy the G1 and not wait for the G2.
What do you think they meant?
