An Android Enters SXSW & PubCon in Austin Texas

Google Engineer & Grand Poobah of Webspam, Matt Cutts, was shocked to see my G1 Android phone at PubCon & later SXSW in Austin Texas last week amongst the mass of iPhones.

Both Matt Cutts & I spoke at PubCon where Mr. Cutts made the official Google announcement on Google Friend Connect.

I believe I was the only one with a G1 in the entire conference as I would say at least half the people at PubCon had an iPhone, including Matt.

Matt has both an iPhone & a G1 as he has recently been programming in Android, but left his G1 at home due to not wanting to pay for 2 mobile services.

I spoke about Android within my SEO Site Design panel and people seemed interested in the phone especially with its keyboard, being open sourced, and able to run multiple applications.

Later at SXSW I was again in a sea of iPhones, so much so that the AT&T network crashed several times, as these poor Internet less technophiles had to use my G1 for access.

Both PubCon & SXSW had rendered phone dialing, text messaging, and email passe as the defacto communication was done entirely on Twitter – which I found the keyboard on the G1 MUCH better suited for than the iPhone.

Since I was away we had another Cupcake rumor from an alleged T-Mobile spokesperson, which for myself personally I could take it or leave it.

I am not excited about the keyboard less HTC G2 or Samsung Android phones as I would much rather stick with the G1 especially as its price plummets well below $100.

The Street did have this interesting video on the Mobile Rumble, but left out that Google is not SELLING Android but providing it free so it makes money off the increased mobile Internet usage.

I’m surprised more people at a search conf wouldn’t have G1s by now…Aside from T1′s crappy service it kicks ass over blackberry and iphone. – so i think i figured it out – Girls with fingernail – no touchscreen=blackberry users. Mac lovin’ McLuvin’s all use iPhones so they can ‘sync’ it up to iTunes as they otherwise likely down’t understand how to move music around other than on AppleTV and iTunes, etc. We techie-nerd types (matt included) – need something like the G1 that has a mouse and a joystick and doesn’t require a touchscreen tap for every thing you do or type.

You know what I mean if you know.

KRONiS – hope SXSW was a blast – see you next year.

I honestly love the G1. Sure the keyboard can be a little awkward when you want to do a quick sms or something, but the capabilities of this phone seem to be unlimited.

I personally love having the choice of soft keyboard / touch screen, hardware keyboard, and track ball. Navigation is so easy with this combination.

The ONLY thing I don’t care for with the G1 is the fact that it doesn’t have the 3.5mm headset jack – but adapters cure this just fine.

@kasl33

I agree as the adapter for the 3.5mm is a pain along with the low internal memory and not being able to run applications off the external SD card.

You weren’t the only one there with a G1. I was there with my unlocked developer G1. Unfortunately, I’m using an AT&T sim so I had the same connection issues as everyone else (aside from the fact that I can’t use 3g due to the frequency differences). The wifi worked ok except when everyone crowded into the same room for a panel.

“I am not excited about the keyboard less HTC G2 or Samsung Android phones” .
I couldn’t agree more. If there’s any sense of satisfaction for the late G1 adopters like me, it’s the fact that the keyboard is still in tact :P (honestly didn’t mean for that to come out so cheesy..)

“… I would much rather stick with the G1 especially as its price plummets well below $100.”

When do you expect prices to plummet below $100? I see it is $179.99 now.

I have an early iPhone that I use on T-Mobile. I would like to hop on board Android, especially at a very nice price, like below $100.
