What Is the Name of the Google Android Robot?

Posted by Joe on February 17, 2009 | 18 comments | Filed under : Anything Android

The question that is on everyone’s mind that has not been answered at the 2009 Mobile World Congress is the name of the Google Android robot.

I was asked this question from Donte Reed so I sent emails & tweets to Google Android engineers and developers.

Alexander Muse of Big In Japan (developers of ShopSavvy) said, “In all seriousness we call him Mike.  Most of the Google folks we talk to do too.”

The Google Android engineers I heard back from say they call him Droid or in a fit of rage BugDroid.

As for the giant Android robot statue outside the Google office most call him BigDroid and the dog is Alex.

I figure this is more interesting than the detailed Adobe statement of Flash coming to Android by the end of 2009 or the nice packaging, little substance of the G2 Magic which will only go out to Europe for the foreseeable future.

Of course there was the Androidnot an iPhone cuz it has blue side stripes and doesn’t turn on” phone from Huawei out of China as seen here.

Speaking of names, the contest winner of the FREE Hello, Android book is Bara Kathawa! CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Just noticed as I uninstalled an app it gave me a prompt that said that the app was being uninstalled but could be downloaded again for free.

Seems like market paid apps will be coming real soon.

Google stated that paid apps should be ready for the public by mid this week after opening it up to developers last week.

So if not tonight then Wednesday or Thursday.

IMHO – Should be launched around when an announcement is made at the GSMA World Mobile Congress in Barcelona Spain this week.

[...] Michael Martin asked me last week what the name of the Android ‘guy’ was – I told him we called him Mike. He claimed the Google guys call him Droid or Bug Droid, but clearly he needs a name and since no one else came up with anything I am declaring his official name is now ‘Mike’. Say hello Mike: [...]

So having locked in to T-Mobile for 2 years to get the G1, I now can’t get the new phone because Google have given it exclusively to Vodafone in the UK.

Early adopters get screwed with their pants on. ‘Twas ever thus.

I think the Android Robot’s name should be “Andy”.

The HTC MAGIC, which I’m guessing is the G2 has just came out, like 5 minutes ago when i refreshed my Yahoo page. I’m so annoyed for two reasons: first i just bought my g1 for 370 dollars because i wanted it bad and didn’t want the t-Mobile service, i just bought it today and the htc just announced the second android phone 20 min later. Second reason is…THEY JUST ADMITTED THAT THE HTC MAGIC IS THE “CUPCAKE” UPDATE WE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR!!!

“Engadget has a hands-on video, which shows a slimmer, sexier shell than on the boxy-looking G1; you’ll also see the new, virtual touch keypad, which replaces the G1′s slide-out physical keypad. (For those of you Android geeks out there: Yes, we’re talking the long-rumored “Cupcake” update.)”

don’t tell me this is true…yahoos reporters are always exasperating. I really hope they are wrong once again this time…i will be very disappointed if G1 does not get any more updates and is left out with all the predicting updates of cupcake that we all been waiting for..=(

@Abdel,

To my knowledge when the G2 does come out (Europe only) it will be in the summer of 09.

By then the Cupcake pieces everyone is excited about: video recording, onscreen keyboard, stereo Bluetooth should be perfected for the G2 and have some portability onto the G1.

Already there are third party apps in the Android Market which allow video recording and onscreen keyboard for the G1.

do you believe there’s a chance for the updates to stop for the g1 later on in the future? like many other phones (Sam sung instinct and such) have been side-stepped with its newer successors.

well if they dont come out with cupcake for the g1….wait till that g2 comes out and somebody from xda developers gets their hands on it….

if google doesnt take care of it….im positive one of those guys will

haha good reply pal. the economy isn’t as healthy as it was a few years ago, so it wont be easy for people to keep changing phones every so often just so they can keep up with the android platforms goodies. I had to cut back on food this month to manage buying the G1 (without a contract) XD

14 ruben February 19, 2009 at 12:33 pm

they say the htc magic is gonna be selling in europe in april….and that cupcake would be ready in the 1st quarter of 2009….so end of march would still b considered first quarter….the g1 and the magic seems practically like the same fkn thing……except for the keyboard (obviously) and the battery…..

i wonder if theyre just gonna give us the update around that time to make up for not releasing the htc magic here in the US…..and then eventually release the magic here to try to make a few bucks off the old guinea pigs that dont want a physical keyboard + some new customers….

As of 12:00 AM Central (Chicago) time, Android Market has paid apps.

RIDICULOUS prices for some of them though, they range from 0.99-200.00(USD$). Your only allowed to pay for them through google checkout. The $200 app is supposedly similar to the “Bling” app on iphone in that its just a BS app to showcase that you have that kinda money to buy a BS app. The average range of app prices has been $0.99-9.99. I know for a fact I’m not willing to pay any more then $5 and thats for QUALITY apps not the piece of shit apps they have up right now on the market. Hope developers will get the message and drop the prices cuz its ridiculous, there’s bullshit apps on there for $34.99 and $49.99 and $19.99….uhhh NO THANKS.

PS:
Some of the previously free apps are also now offered….with NO CHANGES except the price has changed from FREE to $ X.XX

Come on, are you serious? THis phone is beginning to disappoint me more and more lately. First no cupcake, then a horrible collection of “paid apps”. Step your game up developers and google.

16 djsubxero February 21, 2009 at 12:49 am

For example:

HelloAIM – $9.99

ScreenCrack – $1.00

Txtract – SMS Backup – $4.89

Seriously, wtf?
