Ever since I got my Android, it has become my default portable music player. While that often doesn’t bode well for the device’s battery life, it also saves me the hassle of carrying around multiple rectangular gadgets. It was just an OK substitution at first, but as the Android platform advanced — especially with the addition of Google Music’s cloud streaming — it became the perfect replacement for my MP3 player. Well, not quite perfect. The one thing it noticeably lacked was a quality audiobook interface. There are some apps for that, though, and Akimbo’s ranks near the top. If you’re an audiobook addict, I highly recommend it for your Android device.

Check out UberMusic from LauncherPro’s developer

If you’re tired of the boring interfaces used by many other media players, you might want to check out the latest from LauncherPro developer Fredrico Carnales. He previously teased his latest project, a new music player, and now we’re getting a look at it. It’s largely based on the stock music app, but it adds some flair. The above screenshot puts that on display. The app automatically downloads images such as this for the band you’re currently listening to. This includes album art as well. The interface is pretty intuitive as well, and it includes other add-ons such as Last.FM scrobbling. You won’t find this in the Market quite yet, but you can just head to Ubermusic.com or click the download link here to get the APK. If you’ve got some room on your handset, this is definitely worth the try.

There is no such thing as too many music apps. Maybe your device doesn’t have enough room for them all, in which case there is such thing for too many music apps for you. But in general, different apps bring different features to the table, and different interfaces work for different people. Different is the word I’m really looking for, I think. It appears that Google has a firm grasp of music ownership, with its Google Music service. They’re rolling out invites pretty quickly at this point, and after using it for almost a month I have to say that I’ve been using my other music apps less and less. But I still do use them, because Google Music doesn’t quite have everything. Yahoo!’s new music app does add a few features to the table, and so it will find a home, if only temporary, on my device.

As I’ve chronicled in this space, the search for the best Android media syncing app has been a long one. For a while I settled with doubleTwist, and that worked well for what it was. But the more I used it the more I got annoyed by the minor bugs, and eventually I was manually managing my music. That’s not what I want, since playlist sync is high on my list of desires. And so I looked around and found a few that appeared worthy. When I read Phandroid’s walk-through of iSyncr, I knew it had potential. Once I tried it, I was hooked. It’s such a simple solution, and it doesn’t require you to install an additional media manager on your computer.

Get the lyrics to songs as you play them with Lyrics App

Posted by Joe on April 20, 2011 | 2 comments | Filed under : Media Players

Seriously, this happens to me all the time. I’m listening to a song on my Android, since it’s my primary MP3 player, and I’ll run across a lyric I want to look up. Maybe it’s because I find the line particularly meaningful, or maybe, because I listen to a lot of metal, I can’t understand it. Either way, this oftentimes means a run-in with the worst types of sites on the internet. No one wants to visit a lyrics site. They flash, they pop up, and they’re generally obnoxious. That’s why I’m immediately installing Lyrics App. It shows me the lyrics to my currently playing song.

A look at the new Android music player

Posted by Joe on April 6, 2011 | 1 comment | Filed under : Media Players

Yesterday, when I wrote about the new Android music player, I promised a longer look at it once I had the time to install and play with it. What I didn’t promise is that it would bring anything significant to the table. While there are a few neat features that I appreciate, this appears to be more of a bug fix than anything else. Still, there are pictures to be viewed, so here’s what the new version brings.

Updated version of the Android Music Play available

A few weeks ago I went through an experiment to see if Google’s Honeycomb music player really could sync my music with the cloud. It was a valiant effort, I think, but ultimately it failed. In the meantime I did find plenty to like about the Honeycomb music player. Thanks to a development that surfaced this morning, we can now download an updated version of the app. The screenshots make it look a bit different than the original Honeycomb music player, so it’s probably worth the download.
