Explore Your Green Thumb with Android Apps

I have been gardening since I was old enough to play in the dirt. For me, gardening is more than a hobby…it is a great stress reliever, a healthy way to break a sweat, an exercise in self-reliance, and a creative outlet. The payoff — whether it is in the sweet smelling flowers that attract foraging honey bees and an assortment of butterflies, or the abundance of fresh seasonal vegetables I can share with family and friends — is always rewarding, and it makes me feel accomplished to reap the fruits of my labor. The secret to gardening isn’t in the fertilizer, it’s in the apps.

Podcasting delight: BeyondPod $1.99 this weekend

Posted by Joe on November 24, 2011 | 1 comment | Filed under : Applications

On one of my other sites we feature a reasonably popular podcast. We offer many ways to enjoy the podcast, though because it’s hosted on iTunes we do promote it in that way. With the increasing number of Android users we’ve received a number of questions on how they can get the podcast in their favorite podcast application. That has turned us onto a number of podcasting apps, but I’ve seen none better than BeyondPod. If you’re looking for the most comprehensive Android podcast app, look no further. Best of all, it’s on sale for just $2 this weekend, down from $7 normally. Now is the time to jump aboard this train.

Google is full of neat, futuristic ideas, but none has appealed to me to the same degree that Google Wallet has. It’s a practical, easy solution that will, in time, allow me to carry one less bulky item. You can watch the above video for a quick introduction to Google Wallet, and then read on for some perspective.

The time for downloading NFL apps is pretty much over. The league kicked off the 2011 season on Thursday and had its first full Sunday of action yesterday, so the diehards are already set up with apps. If you have DirecTV, chances are you’ve already signed up for the Sunday Ticket. If you’re a Honeycomb tablet owner, however, there’s one more app you absolutely need. DirecTV has released a Sunday Ticket app for Android tablets, and it’s available for free now at the Market. It provides streams of every Sunday game (excepting blacked out games) and the Red Zone Channel. You can also get stats and highlights from around the league — though you better get the highlight watching in before 8:15 p.m. ET on Sundays, when NBC gets the exclusive rights to those. Again, it’s free for Sunday Ticket subscribers, so head to the Market and download Sunday Ticket for Tablets today.

SiMi Clock Widget gives you a bold, simplistic Android clock

Posted by Joe on August 17, 2011 | 2 comments | Filed under : Applications

On Friday I buried the lead. In a post about the transparent Pandora widget, I posted a picture that included a clock widget. Apparently, AndGeeks readers were more interested in the clock than the Pandora widget. (And yeah, I screwed up in that post. There is a Pandora widget, but it’s not available if the app is on your SD card.) For those asking, it is the SiMi Clock Widget, and your enthusiastic curiosity is justified. It’s a pretty awesome clock widget that comes with plenty of customization options.

Never for get your prepaid balance again with Prepay Widget

Posted by Joe on August 16, 2011 | no comment | Filed under : Applications

For some users, monitoring minutes and messages is not an issue. Unlimited plans are in, and with prepaid they can save you a lot of money. But not every prepaid plan includes unlimited minutes and messages. Virgin Mobile, which we covered along with the Motorola Triumph, has limits on its most attractive service plan. Other carriers, too, offer Android handsets with metered plans. Many carriers — and soon it’s likely to be more of them — offer limited data, too. Thankfully for prepaid users, a new widget lets you keep close track of your usage habits.

Pandora users will love the transparent widget

Posted by Joe on August 12, 2011 | 11 comments | Filed under : Applications

Which application do you use most frequently on your Android? For me it’s not even close. Every day when I’m out, whether in the car or taking a walk, I load up Pandora. For my money it’s the best freely available streaming radio option, and it works like a charm on my N1. The one thing it lacks is a widget, but it was only a matter of time before someone developed one. Imagine my delight, then, when I saw such a widget on xda. As you can see in the screenshot, it’s a transparent widget, too, blending seamlessly into your home screen. You can track forward, pause, thumbs up, or thumbs down a song without going back into the app. It’s also nice to see the artist and song on your home screen, rather than in the notifications bar.

There’s no Android Market listing for this one, so you’ll have to allow for non-Market apps (Setting -> Applications -> Check the Unknown Sources box) and then go to http://db.tt/jFS4st1 to download it.

Make sure you split the check properly with Bill Splitter

Posted by Joe on August 11, 2011 | no comment | Filed under : Applications

With the rise of smartphones has come the rise of useful applications — as in, applications that are directly useful in every day situations. One type of app that has gained prominence is the kind that splits up your restaurant bill. Divvying up the check is a time-worn ritual that no one wants to experience. It can get contentious, and no one wants that after a satisfying meal. There are plenty of these apps in the Market, but 1) we haven’t yet covered one here, and 2) even if we did I’d still feature Bill Splitter. It’s a great app, found on the xda blog, that takes care of literally everything you need when splitting a bill among friends or business associates.

Keep your ringer volume in check with Volume Control+

Posted by Joe on August 9, 2011 | 1 comment | Filed under : Applications

How many times have you gone to adjust the media volume on your Android, only to accidentally adjust the ringer volume instead? This has happened to me hundreds of times, so I’m sure it’s far from an isolated problem. The issue is that when you open up a media app, such as Pandora, you have to wait until the app is fully loaded before you can adjust the media volume. Adjust it a little too soon and you’ll end up adjusting the ringer volume, which can cause you problems later. I’ve also had problems on the lock screen, where I accidentally mute the ringer. This can lead to unnecessarily missed calls. Thankfully, there is an app that can help you keep that under control.
